Geography of Menorca
The Menorca, most Eastern of the Balearic Islands has a surface of 701,84 km2s and its coastal length is of 216 km. The territory is distributed in 8 municipalities and more than 72,000 inhabitants throughout the year.
She is very flat, the highest mountain,
Mount Toro, has 358 ms of height, which it follows the following one to him, S'Enclusa, with 274 M.s
The relief is very varied, equipping the island with all type of landscapes. The north is based on diverse materials of the eras primary, secondary and quaternary, having like result a very steep coast; the south, on the contrary, shows a limestone platform of the tertiary one, furrowed by precipices and rich vegetation, ending at sand coves white.
Other important geographic features are the ports of Mahón and Ciutadella.
Also they are of interest the quarries (of marés), sometimes showing the great cubical geometry, other times simulating empty labyrinths between walls. We find as example the Camí d'en Robadones (it is Castell), underground quarry where they show a museum of traditional boats of fishing; Santa Ponça (Alaior) is a quarry of incredible dimensions; Binicalsitx (ctra. of Galdana Cove) of impressive whiteness; Sa Cetària (Ciutadella) next to the sea, is the fruit of a fact grazing the poetic thing of the Minorcan inhabitants, who, to emigrate, took a stone piece to construct their house in the distance; the quarries of S'Hostal (Ciutadella), are an example of quarry rehabilitated like cultural and environmental center.
The visit to these quarries offers the coincidence of quarries of mechanical extraction (today great amphitheatre for concerts), and of a labyrinth of natural quarries, in the walls of which we found a sample of the native botany and a garden to the medieval style with medicinal and aromatic plants.
In this way we see the menorquina tradition use the quarries in disuse like protected orchards of winds.
Also the precipices are important, of an exceptional beauty. They emphasize the one of Trebalúger and the one of Algendar, that, given its strange and mysterious landscape, reunites many popular legend. This last conserve its volume during almost all the year (it ends at Galdana Cove), and is worthy to cross it in an excursion. Its access is simple, well is signalized in both directions (as much from the exit of Ferreries towards Ciutadella, as from Galdana Cove). In its stone walls we found vegetal and animal species of all type, even some that only occur in Menorca.
One of the zones more known this precipice is Walled Cova, a grotto that was long weather dark by a stone wall from where its name comes. In its interior they appeared prehistoric rest.
