Menorca excursion North zone
North excursion and the Northwest:
We would leave from the highway from the Avenue of Doctor Guàrdia, almost inside the port of Mahón, for Fornells. Once we cross the torrent of the Gora, to a kilometer of one widens curve we turned aside ourselves to the right direction of Lagoon DES Grau. It is the more important humid zone of the island and a refuge of aquatic birds of the Balearics (we remember that it is a natural reserve). The lagoon is an ample backed up and little deep water lagoon, surrounded by smooth hills with small cultures. He is interesting to surround the lagoon on foot (the entrance to the traffic is not allowed), and to distinguish all the species of present birds.
Once finished the stroll, we can go to the port of Is Grau, to a kilometer, where there is a sand beach where we found all type of services (restaurants, bars, supermarket…) and a small port of fishermen.
Also it is possible to be arrived at the port through pine to the east of the Lagoon, although we can find it with mud or water that prevents the step, and is necessary to go by far well-taken care of with the abundant garrapatas.
From the port, either in tourist boats, or in boats of voluntary fishermen (by a reasonable price), we can visit the Illa d'en Colom, to half kilometer of the beach, island in which we found a unique species of small lizard protected by the law, and endemic vegetables. Also we found rest of another paleo-christian basilica, still in study.
Before arriving at Grau Is, following the highway of Maó Fornells, to about 7 kilometers of the capital, we can be turned aside to the right, in a highway in evil been, although asphalted, that leads until Capifort, or CAP of Favàritx, a viewpoint on the North coast of the island.
Again in the Maó-Fornells highway, about 6 kilometers more in the same direction, we will see a new deflection of the right that takes towards beaches of Na Macaret (where they disembarked the English in the third and last occupation of the island) and the Sandy ground den Castell. This deflection finishes in the narrow Bay of Addaia, where there are a city-planning club nautical and nuclei, that serve as border between Mahón and the Mercadal.
Finally we arrived at Fornells, where the small boiler of lobster is typical and that we can taste in almost all restaurants of the port. This town, that was of fishermen, is now one of the visited tourist centers more of all Balearics.
Apparently, the origin of this town was the construction of a defense castle, the Castell de Sant Antoni, to avoid the berberiscos attacks of 1625, being demolished in 1782. Although to defensive way, yes the watchtower of century XVIII is conserved, in the Cabo de Fornells, from where the CAP of Cavalry is descried.
From the interior of the bay of Fornells, we can see Great the Illa islands or of ses Sargantanes, Illa Petita or DES Porros (where gulls grow up), and Illa DES Revells.
To the bottom of the bay, in dried lagoons, saline left, is paleo-christian basilica DES CAP DES Port de Fornells. Apparently, next to this basilica there was a town, assuming that one was the third Phoenician city of Sa Nitja. In order to arrive at this town it is necessary to return to the Fornells-Mahón highway, and to turn aside itself towards Is Mercadal. This way ends at the CAP of Cavalry that offers a spectacular view of the cliff, from where we can also accede in excursions to beaches like Cala de Tirant and the Binimel beach•là. If we continued on foot from this last beach we will arrive at Pregonda Cove, beach characterized by the rocks as a small barren island that seem to close it to the sea.
