South excursion Ciudadella

Excursion by the South of Ciutadella
The South zone of Ciutadella is the one of beaches more outstanding and preferred by the tourists by its small and familiar size. Thus, of the most known, we found Cove Macarella and Cala in Turqueta, that have been object of popular campaigns by their protection like natural zone. Are gathered beaches, prote'ge'es of the wind and storms, with a small torrent to the bottom and a pool of salt water where they inhabit turtles.
We arrive at them taking the highway from Ciutadella towards oratorical from Sant Joan de Missa (small rural Church of century XIV, to about 4 kilometers of the city, of great importance and protagonism during the celebrations). Against this oratory, the highway is branched off, one towards Cove Macarella (with prehistoric caves in its cliffs, and with encamped permission of between its pine groves) and the other towards Cove in Turqueta.
Also we will find other coves worthy to be mentioned as Cove in Bosch, White Cove, Santandria, Are Saura (the considered one like better and more recommendable, and by which, to arrive, we must visit a prehistoric town, Is Catlar, with room hipóstila, walls of defense, taula incomplete, talaiots and rest of Roman towers)…
Finalizing the route, it is singular the fact that the houses of Are Saura or Torre Saura, are constructed next to a beautiful medieval tower, of square plant.

Mahón - St Climent - C. Porter - Limes VOC

From Mahón, by the Vassallo Street (that leaves the Plaça of s'Esplanada) towards the west, it is arrived at the Airport of Menorca, and the town of Sant Climent, where we can contemplate talaiot of Torelló, and talaiots of Cúrnia. Also near Torelló we found the rest of another paleo-christian basilica, that conserves a mosaic of the century I SAW. From this town of small rectilinear streets around a Church of century XVII, completely reformed at the beginning of century XX, we arrived at Cove Canutells, a built-up nucleus around the beach. In order to arrive at this one the passage by the Small village of Formet is forced, of characteristic menorquina architecture of century XIX, with French details.

At about 10 kilometers from this town, we arrived at Cove in Porter, urbanization with beach in which is the Cova d'en Xoroi, inhabited from prehistoric times, and that has been adapted like bar and nightclub, with a viewpoint on the coast.
Also it emphasizes the Lime set VOC, with more than 150 caves of interment of the age of the iron, to which it is very difficult to accede, since they are placed a precipice on the brink of madness. Between to these there are them caves of inhabitable capacity (with almost 2 meters of stop, and between 5 and 10 meters in width and length, and columns as a separation of rooms), of very small dimensions that served as refuge throughout history for the primitive settlers, the Romans, the Christian farmers, and even nowadays for hippies or adventurers use who them as provisional residences of summer.

Mahón - Trepuco - St Lluis - Binibeca

Mahón - Trepucó - Sant Lluis - Binibeca
In the first place we can visit the Sanctuary of the Mare de Déu de Gràcia (employer of the city, honest with popular celebrations, commotions and caragols at the beginning of September), following from the Plaça de S'Esplanada, by the street Doctor Orfila and in the first street to the right, carrer DES Cos de Gràcia, that ends at the Camí de Gràcia. At the end of this way we found the cemetery of century XIX, and back-to-back to this one, the Sanctuary. This hermitage was reconstructed between 1697 and 1705, since the original one had been destroyed by the pirates of Barbarroja.
To about 500 meters following the Camí de Gràcia, we found the rest of the town of Trepucó, with talaiot, taula and vivendas prehistoric
From this town it is easy to accede to the town of Sant Lluís, founded by the French during its dominion between 1756-1763. In this town we found drawing up very regular, with rectilinear streets, its organizational center in the Church (1783), of neoclassic facade and where it emphasizes the shield of the king of France. Sant Lluís is independent municipality of Mahón since the beginning of century XX.
The provincial race course of Mahón is in the highway of Maó to Sant Lluís, happening through the old Airport of Menorca (constructed during the Civil War and that nowadays is a sport air base where there are several annual competitions).

From Sant Lluís, following the different radial highways, we can realise a small excursion within the route. We leave from Prime End (modern urbanization with beach, where we found the tower of defense of Are Gauxo, of century XVIII, turned today into youthful refuge), for the West, with the Illa of l'Aire to the right, course to the tower of Alcaufar, happening through the rest of constructed salt mines without they arrived to be used. When arriving at the tower, we are in the middle of the passage, where there is a playita, the one of the Roig Gypsy dialect. The landscape changes, no longer is barren, and takes step to the precipice of Alcaufar, where we can also visit its cove and urbanization (great tourist centers). After crossing it, we will arrive at a route that leads to the urbanization of S'Algar. Whoever, it will be able to continue towards Cala, next to the Rafalet End, also with a precipice.
From Prime End marine excursions can be contracted the Illa of l'Aire, opposite, ideal for the diving.
About 6 kilometers of Sant Lluís we can also visit Torret, another pueblecito of fishermen with another watchtower also of century XVIII. Also the urbanizations of Binibeca, Binisafúller or Biniparratx.

From Trepucó towards the east (or backing down from Sant Lluís) we arrived at the End of Sant Carles, and to It is Castell or Villacar them, where we can visit the fort of Sant Felip, and the Military Museum, besides a series from urbanizations and districts to his around.
In the zone of the Marine Stroll of Villacar them, like Calesfons or Cala Corb, there are bars and restaurants for tourists, in the old caves of fishermen. From there, we can realise excursions towards the Illes d'en Colom and of l'Aire, cross the port of Mahón, or go towards Galdana Cove.

Menorca excursion North zone

North excursion and the Northwest:

We would leave from the highway from the Avenue of Doctor Guàrdia, almost inside the port of Mahón, for Fornells. Once we cross the torrent of the Gora, to a kilometer of one widens curve we turned aside ourselves to the right direction of Lagoon DES Grau. It is the more important humid zone of the island and a refuge of aquatic birds of the Balearics (we remember that it is a natural reserve). The lagoon is an ample backed up and little deep water lagoon, surrounded by smooth hills with small cultures. He is interesting to surround the lagoon on foot (the entrance to the traffic is not allowed), and to distinguish all the species of present birds.
Once finished the stroll, we can go to the port of Is Grau, to a kilometer, where there is a sand beach where we found all type of services (restaurants, bars, supermarket…) and a small port of fishermen.
Also it is possible to be arrived at the port through pine to the east of the Lagoon, although we can find it with mud or water that prevents the step, and is necessary to go by far well-taken care of with the abundant garrapatas.
From the port, either in tourist boats, or in boats of voluntary fishermen (by a reasonable price), we can visit the Illa d'en Colom, to half kilometer of the beach, island in which we found a unique species of small lizard protected by the law, and endemic vegetables. Also we found rest of another paleo-christian basilica, still in study.
Before arriving at Grau Is, following the highway of Maó Fornells, to about 7 kilometers of the capital, we can be turned aside to the right, in a highway in evil been, although asphalted, that leads until Capifort, or CAP of Favàritx, a viewpoint on the North coast of the island.
Again in the Maó-Fornells highway, about 6 kilometers more in the same direction, we will see a new deflection of the right that takes towards beaches of Na Macaret (where they disembarked the English in the third and last occupation of the island) and the Sandy ground den Castell. This deflection finishes in the narrow Bay of Addaia, where there are a city-planning club nautical and nuclei, that serve as border between Mahón and the Mercadal.
Finally we arrived at Fornells, where the small boiler of lobster is typical and that we can taste in almost all restaurants of the port. This town, that was of fishermen, is now one of the visited tourist centers more of all Balearics.
Apparently, the origin of this town was the construction of a defense castle, the Castell de Sant Antoni, to avoid the berberiscos attacks of 1625, being demolished in 1782. Although to defensive way, yes the watchtower of century XVIII is conserved, in the Cabo de Fornells, from where the CAP of Cavalry is descried.
From the interior of the bay of Fornells, we can see Great the Illa islands or of ses Sargantanes, Illa Petita or DES Porros (where gulls grow up), and Illa DES Revells.
To the bottom of the bay, in dried lagoons, saline left, is paleo-christian basilica DES CAP DES Port de Fornells. Apparently, next to this basilica there was a town, assuming that one was the third Phoenician city of Sa Nitja. In order to arrive at this town it is necessary to return to the Fornells-Mahón highway, and to turn aside itself towards Is Mercadal. This way ends at the CAP of Cavalry that offers a spectacular view of the cliff, from where we can also accede in excursions to beaches like Cala de Tirant and the Binimel beach•là. If we continued on foot from this last beach we will arrive at Pregonda Cove, beach characterized by the rocks as a small barren island that seem to close it to the sea.
