Flora of Menorca

One says that in Menorca it has more than thousand vegetal species, located in a zone of transition between the south of Europe and the north of Africa, that must to the climate coexistence both: encinar, of European and own character of humid places; and Garriga, own vegetation of the southern, almost subdesert Mediterranean.

The most representative vegetation of the island was to encinar, although its partial disappearance honors the pines and acebuches (ullastres), predecessor genetically of the olive tree, to resorts traditionally to obtain the wood.
Due to the necessity to take advantage of the water, the species of impermeable and perennial leaf predominate, against those of expired leaf. Those that we found in backward movement they are “the domestic” calls, like the carob tree, almond tree, fig tree and olive tree.

In a second level of vegetation we found lentisco, buckthorn, madroños, heather, mirto, retama, juniper, rosebays, brambles… and more level with ground, liliáceas (like the wild asparagus), aráceas (like the particular time of frare), and some peculiar orchids, like the “yellow or blue fly”.

Also we found beach lilies in the zones dunares, white and black steppes in deforested zones, or reed in moist soils.
